Working with Nature

Caring for our cows

Organic farmers use natural, holistic methods to maintain a healthy herd. That means nurturing their animals with attentive daily care, clean living conditions and a wholesome organic diet including pasture grazing. Just like people, cows thrive in a low-stress environment, so organic farms also allow plenty of access to the outdoors for exercise.

Organic regulations prohibit the use of artificial growth hormones — a practice that many conventional dairy farmers use to increase milk supply. Rather than using growth hormones, organic farmers encourage optimal milk production by holistically supporting the animal’s overall health.

Grazing matters

Have you ever wondered what an organic dairy cow eats? Well, like you, she thrives on a variety of healthy foods and plenty of exercise. That means spending at least a third of her year in the pasture, grazing on organic crops raised without pesticides. During seasons when grazing isn’t possible, she stays healthy on certified organic feed, and continues to enjoy ample access to the outdoors for activity and fresh air.

Grazing is healthy for cows, and for the planet, too. By dedicating land to organic crops, organic famers create sustainable acreage free of toxic and persistent chemicals that can harm the land, air, and water.
