Horizon® Grants Annual HOPE Award to Local Farmers Committed to Sustainability and Organic Agriculture Education
BROOMFIELD, Colo., (October 2, 2010) Horizon® is proud to announce the recipients of the 2010 Horizon Organic Producer Education (HOPE) Award, which recognizes farmers who create positive change in their communities by practicing and serving as a model for organic agriculture. Harvey and Connie Frasier from Mohawk, N.Y., received this year’s award for their sustainable farming practices and dedication to promoting organic agriculture in their local community.
The Frasiers were honored with the HOPE Award during Farm Aid’s 25th anniversary concert on October 2 at Miller Park in Milwaukee, Wis. Farm Aid is the longest running concert-for-a-cause in America, held each year to promote the importance of family farming, as well as raise awareness about the economic, environmental and health challenges that our nation faces, which family farmers can help us address. Horizon Organic has been a major sponsor of Farm Aid since 2004 and founded the HOPE Award five years ago.
“The HOPE Award means a lot to our family, as we take great pride in our work and are grateful to be in a business that’s supportive to both the people and the planet,” said Connie Frasier. “We hope this award will help us further spread the word about organic farming and continue to help those interested in learning more about switching to organic farming practices.”
The Frasiers, who are fourth generation farmers, transitioned from conventional to organic farming a decade ago. At the time, they were only the second organic farm in New York’s Herkimer County. They quickly discovered additional lifestyle benefits, both for their family and their cows. “Thanks to organic farming practices, we noticed that our cows were healthier and our family was healthier due to reduced stress,” said Frasier.
“With the HOPE Award, we gratefully acknowledge the Frasier’s spirit and commitment to organic,” said Mike Ferry, Horizon Organic president. “They truly exemplify the power to make a difference in their community by encouraging other family farmers to undertake the transition to organic and by practicing organic principles that respect and protect our environment.”

The couple has since helped many other local farmers — two of whom are Harvey’s grown children, Harvey Jr. and Bryce Frasier — transition from conventional to organic farming. They regularly receive phone calls from farmers who are transitioning and never hesitate to offer support, including guiding them through the organic certification paperwork. “I really want to see everyone make it in the organic business,” said Frasier, who has been supplying organic milk to Horizon Organic for the past 10 years.
They also host regular tours of their farm — which features an environmentally-friendly, low-electricity barn — for local farmers and school elementary school children to help educate them about the benefits of organic dairy farming.
