DHA Omega-3
Horizon Organic Milk with DHA:
A great choice for your growing family.
DHA is one of the “healthy fats” you’ve heard about, known as Omega-3′s. It’s a major structural fat in the brain and retina, accounting for up to 97% of the omega-3 fats in the brain and up to 93% of the omega-3 fats in the retina.2 DHA is important for supporting brain, heart and eye health at all ages.
According to Horizon’s consulting pediatrician, Dr. Alan Greene,* most American kids don’t get the optimal amount of DHA. The typical 3-year-old averages only 19 mg of DHA a day, far less than the 150 mg that leading health authorities recommend.3

DHA has been used in foods in Europe since 1993, and in the U.S. since 2002. It’s an ingredient in nearly 100% of infant formulas and in 500 food and supplement products around the world. In fact, more than 64 million infants worldwide have been fed formula with DHA! The specific DHA used in Horizon products, life’sDHA from Martek, has been safety-approved by the FDA for nearly a decade.
A growing body of scientific research suggests that DHA helps support brain, heart and eye health throughout life, including in young children. But children ages one to five typically don’t get much DHA, possibly because the main dietary sources of this nutrient are fatty fish and organ meats (not so popular with kids!)4. That’s why choosing DHA-supplemented foods, especially everyday staples like milk, really matters.
Like all Horizon products, our milk with DHA meets the high standards of the U.S. National Organic Program. The specific DHA used in our products (life’sDHA from Martek) is explicitly approved for use in organic foods. To learn more about DHA and the Organic Standards, check out our DHA Facts.
Our plant-based DHA is more sustainable than fish-based DHA because it’s made from a renewable algae resource, and does not contribute to over-fishing. And like all ingredients used in organic foods, our DHA is non-GMO. In addition, the DHA used in Horizon products neither contains nor is made with hexane, a chemical solvent sometimes used to extract oils from their original source.
Since its introduction in 2007, our DHA-fortified organic milk has consistently ranked among our most popular products. Today, it’s welcomed in over three million households all over the country. And it’s no wonder; wholesome, delicious organic milk with DHA is one of the easiest ways to get more of this important nutrient into your family’s everyday diet.
